A dealer in a strip mall parking lot once put three machines out at the same time on a Saturday morning: a tadpole trike with two wheels forward and the steering under the seat, a delta with one wheel forward and two behind, and a short-wheelbase two-wheeled recumbent with above-seat bars. The loop he marked with cones was maybe two hundred feet, with one tight left, one sweeping right, a curb cut onto a gravel apron, and a stop sign at the end. That loop answered more questions in twenty minutes than a month of forum reading, because every difference that matters between these three layouts shows up in cornering, in turning radius, in how you stop, and in what happens when a wheel leaves pavement.
The corner is the first thing to check, and the tadpole wins it plainly
Take the sweeping right at a speed that feels slightly rude. On the tadpole, the two front wheels are ahead of you and the load transfers onto the outside one, which you can see lean and load as it happens; the machine warns you before it does anything, and the inside wheel gets light well before it lifts. On the delta, the single wheel is out front and the pair is behind you, so the warning arrives from underneath and behind, which is a harder signal to read at first. The two-wheeler simply leans, like any bicycle, and asks nothing new of you at all.
Turning circle is where the delta and the two-wheeler change places
The tight left is the test that surprises people. A tadpole with wide track and long boom often needs a wider arc than a car does in the same lot, and on a rail trail with a switchback you will sometimes back up and take a second bite. Deltas vary enormously here: the ones with a single steered front wheel can pivot inside their own length, which is why they get used for grocery runs and campground loops. The two-wheeled recumbent turns tightly at speed and poorly at walking pace, because low-speed balance on a long wheelbase takes practice you have not done yet.
Seat height decides sight lines, stopping and how you get out
Measure the seat pan to the ground on each machine before you ride it, and note the number. A racing tadpole may put your hips lower than the hub of a passing sedan's wheel, which is fast, stable and hard to see over at a four-way stop. Most delta seats sit noticeably higher, often close to a kitchen chair, which is why riders with hip replacements, balance issues or a bad knee gravitate to them; you stand up out of a delta rather than climbing out of a tadpole. The two-wheeler sits in between and requires a foot down at every stop.
Load carrying and the gravel shoulder
Put a bag of dog food behind the seat on each one. The delta carries it best, over or between the rear wheels, close to where the load naturally belongs, and a rear rack on a delta behaves like a rack on an upright. The tadpole carries weight behind and above the single drive wheel, which is fine until that wheel spins on a wet climb. On the gravel apron, the tadpole tracks straight and unbothered with three contact patches, the delta's driven rear wheels can scrabble, and the two-wheeler needs the same attention a road bike needs when the shoulder turns loose.
Why first buyers land on tadpoles, and when a delta is the right answer
Most people buy a tadpole because it is the layout that never asks you to balance, brakes hard in a straight line, corners predictably, and is sold by more dealers with more sizes in stock. That is a sound reason, not a fashion. A delta is the better answer when you need to get on and off easily, when you park in a garage with a tight door, when you haul real cargo, or when the seat height matters more to your knees than the last few miles per hour. The Consumer Product Safety Commission oversees safety requirements for bicycles sold in the United States, and lighting, flags and mirrors are worth the same care on any of the three.
Ride the loop twice on each machine, once carefully and once at the speed you actually ride, and write the seat height down before you leave.
